Four from the archive

Forty-six years, one door.

Early Years – The Passage – 1980 cover art

1980

The Passage

Recorded live to cassette in a bedroom in Culver City, converted into a studio and already an early Timeroom: an Arp 2600, two Arp sequencers, a Micro Moog, a Roland SH3A and a Space Echo, with Klaus Schulze very much in the air. Steve thought of making it his first solo cassette, then felt his music moving away from long sequencer pieces.

Steve Roach Live at Terminal Island Prison 1982 cover art

1982

Terminal Island Prison

Steve left La Mesa for Los Angeles in 1979, in a VW bug with the back seat taken out to make room for the synthesizers. Soon he was playing across the city and working at the Licorice Pizza record store on Sunset. One of the more surreal bookings of those years took him inside the prison at San Pedro. The recording has had no mastering and no EQ.

Seven Cities – Structures from Silence Live cover art

2024–25

Seven Cities

Every concert on the 40th anniversary tour of Structures from Silence closed the same way. Steve moved out in front of his full setup, closer to the audience, and played Structures on a single instrument, the Oberheim OB-X8. Seven of those versions are here, and subscribers had them ahead of any public release.

The Forgotten Temple cover art

2026

The Forgotten Temple

A single piece of just over an hour, made at the Timehouse in Baja Arizona with acoustic and electrically powered instruments. New this past September, and a fair measure of how the archive works: the oldest music here is a cassette from 1980, and the newest arrived this season.
