| Lie Symmetry Aperus 2018 Geophonic Records (CD) Reviewed by ExposeOn LIE SYMMETRY, Aperus creates an ambient work of highly saturated color and sound, blending resonant analog synths, warm textures and a compelling selection of field recordings. Here, he works as sonic sculptor, exploring the edges, carving the sound with a hands-on approach. The result is an organic nuanced expression of a synesthetic vision, unified with a presention of his artwork. Defying easy categorization, the album combines elements of ambient, electronic, environmental and drone music to create a wide array of emotional tones. With all of its layers and contours, LIE SYMMETRY is sure to reward repeated listens and appeal to fans of various ambient styles and deep drone spaces.

| Meditation In Green Kelly David 2019 Spotted Peccary Music (CD)Meditation in Green, the Spotted Peccary label debut of ambient electronic artist Kelly David, is a psychedelic musical journey deep into the heart of Viet Nam's Mekong Delta. Guided by rich ambient textures, manipulated field recordings, traditional instruments, and a blend of cultural and electronic percussion, the album offers a surreal sonic sojourn into a mysterious land defined by the power of a river and its influence, where nature has always been the dominant force.

magnify | Angkor Kelly David 2006 Rocky Mountain Records RMR 0002 (CD) Produced by Steve RoachAfter his strong debut release BROKEN VOYAGE, electronic artist Kelly David presents a big stride forward in his sound design, composition and flow. Going further into the themes of exotic distant places, here he draws on the specter found in the forbidding Southeast Asian jungles and to a distant past when the mighty Khmer civilization ruled from an immense temple city called Angkor. In a similar way that David Parsons taps into an East Indian atmosphere and spiritual dimension of that region, Kelly uses harmonically rich textures and surreal sounds, along with ethnic-inspired rhythmic passages, to express a risky travelogue of mystery, impending vastness and danger of an area that is still being understood and explored on many levels today. Sonically, the CD was created primarily on analog instruments resulting in a warm and rich sound. Mastered by Steve Roach, and highly recommended.

| Broken Voyage Kelly David (with Steve Roach) 2002 Rocky Mountain Records (CD) Produced by Steve Roach Reviewed by Eclectic Earwig Reviews, KLEM, Sonic CuriosityColorado-based electronic artist Kelly David's debut CD sets course on an ambient-electro-tribal adventure. Drawing imagery from uncharted waters and travels between desolate islands in the South Pacific, the CD takes the shape of a soundtrack journey. Kelly's fascination with pure sound design combined with natural sound sources, mid tempo grooves along with deep textures lead straight to the heart of musical darkness... and light in an inviting sort of way. A strong debut by an artist who has been working quietly towards this release for several years. Mixed at the Timeroom by Steve Roach.

| Silent Conversations Paul Ellis (with Steve Roach) 2005 Groove Unlimited (CD) – importElectronic artist Paul Ellis reaches deeper into his talent for rich, melodic based electronic music for the mind and comes up with a fully matured release of striking pieces. Elegant and sophisticated throughout, the CD covers a wider range of terrain than his previous release. He brings in a few acoustic elements as well, and knows how to blend these with the right touch. Add to this some fine guest performances, including Steve Roach on four tracks. Foundations for two of these tracks were created from live Timeroom improvs with Paul, Steve, Will Merkel and Jeffrey Koepper.

| The Sacred Ordinary Paul Ellis 2004 Groove Unlimited GR-098 (CD) – Netherlands import Produced by Steve RoachOn THE SACRED ORDINARY, Paul's artistry in creating a palette of rich emotional sounds sets a foundation from which he weaves a series of electronic web-like pieces with a keen sense of melodic invention and dimensional symmetry. There is a hint of nostalgia in these tracks as well, if one has been privy to the classic melodic sequencer-style electronic music periods over the past few decades. This brings another kind of depth to the experience, while at the same time this music is really about the here and now as it unfolds with a kind a graceful patience and awareness to detail that keeps pulling you in deeper with each play.

| Letters To The Farthest Star Forrest Fang 2015 Projekt PRO312 (CD)LETTERS TO THE FARTHEST STAR is an ambitious and deeply personal dispatch: a far-reaching sojourn into the diverse ambient/electronic influences that helped shape the last three decades of Fang's unique "Fourth World" style. Fang began his tenth album with a challenge to himself: create a single work that acknowledged both past and present explorations while hinting at new avenues to come.

magnify | The Wolf At The Ruins / Migration Forrest Fang 2013 Projekt PRO290 (CD)Projekt opens the archives to bring back two formative ambient works. Originally released in 1989 and 1986 respectively, THE WOLF AT THE RUINS and MIGRATION have been out of print for over 20 years. They're from the period when he began his own fusion of electronics and traditional non-Western instruments into a modernist blend of electronics, ambient and world music. Re-released with two bonus tracks per album, and remastered by Robert Rich, this limited edition 2-CD reissue of 300 copies is the definitive way to experience Fang's early visionary blend of space music, hypnotic minimalism and earthy polyrhythms with a Far Eastern bent.
Originally released on Fang's cryptically named Ominous Thud label, these releases incorporate tape delay techniques first popularized by ambient pioneers Robert Fripp and Terry Riley, combined with a broadening palette of influences from non-Western folk music to ambient music to progressive rock. THE WOLF AT THE RUINS, released in 1989, was a particularly significant album for Fang that brought him to greater prominence with extensive airplay on nationally syndicated radio show such as Music From the Hearts of Space and Echoes.
"These albums were really a turning point for me, musically," says Fang. "With my exposure to traditional Chinese music and other non-Western forms such as Balinese gamelan, I was seeing and hearing new colors and textures that seem to form their own sound and language, maybe just a bit beyond my grasp but close enough for me to preserve the essence of what I was experiencing."
"Fang's compositional stylings applied to the genre of space music with exceptional results." -- Billboard
What reviewers have said about THE WOLF AT THE RUINS:
"THE WOLF AT THE RUINS is an intriguing album that freely mixes space music with multifaceted ethnic colorings in a way that is sure to appeal to connoisseurs of experimental global music." -- Allmusic.com
"An oriental-occidental fantasy world of music is created; not new age nor background music, but something deeper, evocative and involved." -- Audion
"[Fang's] release ... confirms his stature ... as being among the best American synthesists. However, Fang does not rely solely on electronics. He works with traditional non-Western instruments and musical styles (especially those from his Chinese heritage), and processes them through contemporary technology and a more modernist approach ... Simply put, Fang has produced a gorgeous piece of work." -- Option
What reviewers have said about MIGRATION:
"Dreamlike and meditative soundscapes." -- New Gibraltar Encyclopedia of Progressive Rock
"Layered keyboards are the dominant instrument or repetition-based pieces reminiscent of Terry Riley and Mike Ratledge." -- Sound Choice

| Animism Forrest Fang 2012 Projekt PRO274 (CD) – Eco-Wallet Reviewed by Relaxed MachineryMulti-instrumentalist / electronic composer Forrest Fang has been creating his powerful blend of world instrument East-West-influenced sound art for over three decades. The pieces have the elegance and grace of "serious" composed music but the overarching feeling is pure, all-organic, and very human at the core. On his latest, ANIMISM, a long list of acoustic instruments and some synths are brought into play. The thick harmonic stew is created from a deep and heady slow boil of acoustic and electronic sources, treated with extreme audio processing, finding a shared cellular bond after what feels like a long marinade in deep reverberating spaces. Highly recommended!

| Sans Serif: Unbound Forrest Fang 2011 Projekt PRO257 (CD)Forrest Fang had been creating outstanding minimal, ethno-ambient recordings since the 80's. This new release could easily be filed in the Immersion category. Five pieces hover and slowly shift in a cloud-like movement. The pure texture is created from a strata of sinuous harmonic layers. The ambiguous source of the of sound is rich, organic and at times other-worldly.

| Phantoms Forrest Fang 2009 Projekt PRO230 (CD)PHANTOMS is Forrest Fang's 9th solo album and the follow-up to his Projekt release, GONGLAND. Nearly eight years in the making, PHANTOMS builds on the gamelan-influenced soundscapes of its predecessor by weaving organic sounds of non-Western stringed and percussion instruments and filtering those sounds through a rich melodic tapestry of warm and vaporous atmospheres. Fang's subtly layered and continually evolving textures combine his Asian influences with his love of fractal algorithms that reflect the chaotic beauty of nature. The ambiences of PHANTOMS evoke a state of contemplation within a world in flux. The centerpiece of the album is a 23-minute ambient suite -- "The Hallucinations of Hung Tung" -- inspired by the otherworldly paintings of a Taiwanese fisherman and outsider artist.

| Arctisonia Jeffrey Koepper 2011 Air Space Records (CD)Arctisonia is the seventh album in the superb discography of Jeffrey Koepper. Based on an arctic theme, this CD offers the listener seven tracks of frozen atmospheres, cold textures and icy forms, all realized with classic analogue synth sounds. Including gear by Moog, ARP, Sequential Circuits, Oberheim, Roland, Yamaha and many others from a bygone era, the equipment list reads like a keyboard catalog from the 70's and 80's. While Jean-Michel Jarre and Michael Garrison seem to hover over his music, Koepper communes with his machines in a fight against the notion that this genre belongs to history rather than the present. He knows well the territory of plugs, cables and jacks and crafts a pleasing palate of unique electronic tones. Upon this foundation a great deal of sonic architecture may be constructed.

| Quadranteon Jeffrey Koepper 2009 Air Space Records (CD)QUADRANTEON is Jeffrey Koepper's latest solo release. Like his previous albums, it is composed entirely with vintage analog synths, drum machines and analog sequencers. With this album Koepper explores deep emotional ambient worlds. Divided into four movements / parts, it is an emotional electronic journey through four moods. Koepper uses a combination of ambient textures, sequencer rhythms and deep atmospheres to create these lush electronic structures. QUADRANTEON has a very organic flowing feel between its parts, and touches on deep ambience as well as intense sequential rhythms.

| Sequentaria Jeffrey Koepper 2008 Air Space Records (CD) Produced by Steve Roach Reviewed by Electroambient SpaceSEQUENTARIA is Jeffrey Koepper's new solo release, and like his previous ETHEREA and MOMENTIUM, SEQUENTARIA relies completely on classic analog synths, drum machines and analog sequencers to construct an organic melodic-rythmic-sequential interweave. The overall feeling is playful and inspired, with a hint of nostalgia as the warmth of vintage analogue sounds and sequences emerge in forms that evolve from the interactive hands-on approach these instruments offer. Fans of classic Jean-Michel Jarre and Tangerine Dream will be especially interested in this release. Mastered by Steve Roach.

| Momentium Jeffrey Koepper (with Steve Roach) 2006 Air Space Records 002 (CD) Produced by Steve RoachMOMENTIUM is Koepper's new solo release after his debut CD ETHEREA. On this one he amps-up the energy with a flow of pieces created around the sequencer as a tool to give the music momentum. Koepper is a long-time proponent of analog and hardware synths, thus allowing his hands-on approach to become essential in shaping the flow as it occurs. The first track alone is worth the price of admission, calling up the ghosts of Tangerine Dream in their glory days. Warm tones and hypnotic patterns intermix into a fine result throughout the entire set. Steve Roach was integral in the final arrangement, mastering and finishing treatments of MOMENTIUM.

| Etherea Jeffrey Koepper (with Steve Roach) 2003 Air Space Records 001 (CD) Produced by Steve RoachJeffrey Koepper has been creating electronic music since 1985. He has released material in the past with the groups Pure Gamma and Immortal. ETHEREA, produced with ambient legend Steve Roach, is his first full-length solo release. His influences by early electronic musicians Tangerine Dream, Jean-Michel Jarre, Klaus Schulze and Steve Roach will be heard in this release of warm pulsing meditations and serene soundscapes. These influences were the spark that ignited his creative spirit. True to his roots, Koepper uses a variety of analogue synthesizers and sequencers to create his evolving sound-world sculptures. His desire is to continue in the fine tradition of classic electronic music while bringing forth his unique approach of creating warm, emotionally-crafted music.

Byron carved out a collection of incredible trance grooves for nearly a year, eventually bringing in the prana-infused didgeridoo of Dashmesh Khalsa on every track. Steve joined on in early January 2010 and poured his heart and soul-drenched soundworlds into the six pieces, covering a full range of ecstatic dreamtime flow: rhythm, breath and expansion. The end result is a full-blown dreamtime alchemy of all the elements. The living, breathing percussion, didgeridoo and soundworlds are unified in a single purpose: to open to the door out of the ordinary world, initiating the listener into an empowered journey of infinite possibilities for spiritual rebirth, illumination, and transcendence.

| A Warning From the Elders Byron Metcalf 2007 Dr. BAM's Music (CD)In this latest solo project, Byron expands his sonic explorations of the shamanic path of soul-based and heart-centered living that is the foundation of his work. This work is centered around organic trance rhythms and interlocking hybrid grooves which drive the experience forward and deeper into the shamanic realms. A WARNING FROM THE ELDERS is the first project where Byron has used his overtone singing to create harmonic drones and soundscapes. With this potent emphasis on the raw, organic sounds of wood, skin, metal, clay, stone, and the human voice, Byron makes a big step forward in his production skills and the result is a delicious blend of fierce percussion, heart-opening textural voices and overtone singing; a powerful meditation of purpose, presence and compassion.

| The Venerable Dark Cloud 69-minute extended re-release Loren Nerell 2016 Projekt PRO330 (CD) – limited edition of 300An ambient hybrid of traditional Indonesian soundscapes and electronics. Originally released in 2000 on Italy's Amplexus label, Loren Nerell extends THE VENERABLE DARK CLOUD's original 22 minutes to over 69 minutes, culminating in a complete vision capturing a sound that Sequences described as "modern ambient drone music (that) melds with ancient tribal cultures to form something entirely new, sounding ages old".
In 2000, Glen Hammett wrote for The Raging Consciousness Desk, THE VENERABLE DARK CLOUD "is spectacular, creative, and a delight to listen. Enchanting! The sensation the listener comes away with is one of a sacred mysterious quality, and I found myself wanting more when it ended".
Sixteen years later, the wait is over. Capturing an ambient sound informed by Indonesian gamelan music, and the concept of animism, Loren remarks, "What would it be like to be a soul or spirit inside a gong? You would not think in human ways but maybe in gamelan tones. This album is how I imagine it would be to be that gong".
From the liner notes, Loren writes:
This project started back in 1998 when Stefano Gentile asked me to contribute to his Amplexus mini-CD ambient label. The timing was perfect: I had just finished my masters degree in ethnomusicology, it had been a while since I had any time to create music, and I was very eager to get back to creating again.
The first thing that came was the title; well, actually I stole the title. THE VENERABLE DARK CLOUD is the English translation of the name given to the UCLA Javanese gamelan ensemble "Kyai Mendung". I felt this title fit the mood of the music I was writing, plus I also had this concept for what the album was about. Indonesia is predominately Islamic, but underneath there are many layers of other beliefs including Animism, the belief that everything has a soul. This has filtered down into everything including gamelan ensembles; it is thought that the spirit of the ensemble resides in its largest gong. As an outsider, I was fascinated. I wondered, "What would it be like to be a soul or spirit inside a gong?" You would not think in human ways but maybe in gamelan tones. This album is how I imagine it would be to be that gong. "Within The Cloud" is how a gong would think created using only gamelan tones that I processed.
One unique aspect of the Amplexus concept that I found challenging was the short capacity of the little 3-inch CDs they released on; they held about 23 minutes rather than the 74 minutes on a standard CD. It was a challenge, but I found around 22 minutes of music to include. I felt and still feel it is the strongest work I have produced to date.
Fast forward about ten years; the CD is long out of print. Steve Roach suggested that I release the CD again but this time as a full-length version. I went back into my archives and found a couple of tracks that I did not include on the original release due to length. "Liquid Metal Statis" appeared on the Hypnos Compilation CD Weightless, Effortless and has been slightly remixed for this disc. The other was an alternative version of the song "Eclipse," now called "Another Cloud". Completing the vision are tracks "Tenganan Grove" and "Lambat Lane".

| Slow Dream Loren Nerell 2012 Projekt PRO271 (CD) Produced by Steve Roach Reviewed by Relaxed MachineryLoren Nerell creates a masterful release of deep ambient with SLOW DREAM, field recordings from the world of sleep. On his seventh solo release, Nerell's four lengthy tracks are all-encompassing sonic environments forged mainly from extremely processed location recordings made during his trips to Bali. Rich drones and shimmering highlights skirt over the organic textures, processed and layered into subtle, delicate resonant spaces. Glowing, amorphous drifts of sound create the impression of traveling along the supple contours of subterranean passageways. This SLOW DREAM takes ethereal shape as an exotic but compelling atmosphere that hovers between the waking and sleep state. When experienced at a lower volume and left to repeat play over the course of a few hours, the transportive effect of this soundscape is especially powerful and mind-altering.

| Mini CD out of stock | iTunes | The Venerable Dark Cloud Loren Nerell 1999 Amplexus XUS12 (Mini CD)Loren Nerell is known for his fondness for gamelan music. You get the idea of his blending of music elements when you see that his latest CD was recorded over the last few years in Bali, Java, and... Los Angeles. Modern ambient drone music melds with ancient tribal cultures to form something entirely new, sounding ages old. As usual with Amplexus limited edition 3" singles, the packaging is beautiful, featuring a large 3-fold booklet with photography by the label's Stefano Gentile. Being a single, this is 21 minutes of new music. The journey of musical exploration ends far too soon, but it is very, very good while it lasts. The textures are rich, as drones blend with sparse tribal beats and ancient instruments, such as the crystal clear but other-worldly bell tones in "Eclipse". Just reading the credits for the instrumentation used is fascinating, as I couldn't tell you what most of them are. They are fused into a hypnotic mix of soothing sounds, truly transporting you to another place and time. The music is simultaneously dark and yet spiritually uplifting. "Within the Cloud" is appropriately named, as it is light and delicate, though again with a dark quality that keeps this far from new age realms. This track takes surprisingly smooth musical turns, given at least three distinct movements over its less than four-minute run. The disc is clearly intended to be played at one sitting, as it all runs together as a single piece of music. "Ablution" begins with flutes, rain, thunder, and a rooster crowing. The spatial effect is amazing, as the rainfall seems to be coming from deep within the speakers. Then, just when I'm fully drawn in, it's over. More, please. -- Phil Derby, Sequences

| Indonesian Soundscapes Loren Nerell 1999 Soleilmoon SOL 82 (CD)Ethno-flavored field recordings. Given his inspired flair for ethnic music and affinity for travel, Loren Nerell is unquestionably the ideal candidate for producing an audio documentation of Indonesian culture. Compiled during a series of visits to Java and Bali between 1992 and 1997, INDONESIAN SOUNDSCAPES is a varied travel guide via intensive location recordings of native ceremonies, natural environments, and other places of interest. The most intriguing pieces tend to be the ceremonial entries such as the predawn sanctity of "Call to Prayer", the aggressive native percussion ensemble in "Galungan Ceremony", and most of all, the primal rage of gamelan monkey chants in "Kecak". Thoroughly effective are the tracks of natural ambience found in the self-explanatory "Frogs", "Morning Insect Sounds", "Evening Sounds", and "Morning Rain". -- Adam Bialek, Outburn Magazine

| Lilin Dewa Loren Nerell 1996 Side Effects DFX 26 (CD)Nerell is an American who became spellbound by Bali and Java's gamelan music after a chance encounter with it over 20 years ago. He merges field recordings of said music with his own studio manipulaitons (via synths and samplers), but only skilled ears could tell which is which. Nerell's tools include various Indonesian gongs, rain-stick, dholak and slenthem. LILIN DEWA should strike a resonant chord with Westerners receptive to contemplative musics, even if they don't have a clue about gamelan. The moan-and-groan drone of "Galungan" has ritualistic overtones that induce an uneasy, peaceful feeling, like being isloated in a desert. "Borobudur" is akin to Paul Schütze's cinematic take on Southeastern Asian ambience. Muted chanting and cricketsong add to the song's mesmerizing chill. "Bamboo, Iron, Resin, Bronze" is one of the most gorgeous and euphoric pieces of music since Don Cherry's "Brown Rice" (1975), conjuring the image of a stately glide down an Indoesian river. -- Dave Segal, Alternative Press

| Legacy Vidna Obmana 2004 Relapse Records RR66242 (CD)LEGACY is Vidna Obmana's closing chapter in his critically acclaimed and challenging Dante trilogy. The evolution of these darkly surreal soundscapes and harmonic themes now merging with Vidna Obmana's insistent grooves makes this an especially powerful conclusion to a relentlessly uncompromised series. While the trilogy plays with the duality of choices, parallel to the epic Dante poem -- covering the conflict of opposites, between good and evil, black and white -- equals Vidna Obmana's personal longing for an artistic and creative change in pace, profile and style. LEGACY brings forward a fusion of industrial, ambient, fourth world and even some post-rock elements, performed on electric guitars, overtone flutes and an array of electronic devices. This new album also features Steven Wilson, originator and leader of the group Porcupine Tree, who performs a haunting and thematic electric guitar passage to conclude the trilogy.

| Anthology 1984 - 2004 Vidna Obmana 2004 Projekt PRO157 (CD)2004 celebrates the 20th anniversary of Vidna Obmana. These past 20 years signified Vidna Obmana as one of the most wilful independent exprimental artists around. He recorded more than 35 CD albums, whether solo or in collaboration, of music that explored the abrasive side of electronic composition, the freeform landscapes of the isolationist ambient aesthetic, the structured interactivity of Fourth World soundscapes, international music traditions and post-classical experimentations. Vidna Obmana's ANTHOLOGY 1984 - 2004 release marks this celebration and covers Vidna's oeuvre from 1984 up 'til 2004. For the first ever, this anthology links Vidna Obmana's most succesful ambient period with his most obscure earlier phase. A period in his career that Vidna Obmana refused to recognize until a year ago when he realized that his experimental and noise phase created the foundation for what he has produced so far. Twelve selections which range in style from ambient music in the vein of THE RIVER OF APPEARANCE and his ambient Trilogy to harsh noise electronics from the early 80's. An unique and provocative document confirming Vidna Obmana's essential position in the field of electronic and modern experimental music. This CD, the first in a series of anthologies, also stands for the birth of Vidna Obmana's own label Ikon (this first release is in alliance with Projekt). The circle is complete and a new path lies ahead. Be aware this is challenging, provoking listening, shifting between omninous sound eruptions and the more developed forms of later years.

| Subterranean Collective Vidna Obmana (with Steve Roach) 2001 Projekt PRO110 (CD)Ambient collectors have searched for the missing link for years: a search for the albums that reflect the transition from vidnaObmana's early minimalist-ambient work to his current tribal-ambient sound. ECHOING DELIGHT, PARALLEL FLAMING and THE SPIRITUAL BONDING – out of print for most of the 90's – are that missing link. This is the SUBTERRANEAN COLLECTIVE.

| Crossing the Trail Vidna Obmana 1998 Projekt (CD)For vidnaObmana, music is like water. Comprising the majority of this Belgian composers work from his post-industrial period, these two hours focus on a dense dark ambient sound, with an un-nerving sub-texture. The packaging and music on this release amazingly capture Vidna Obmana in his dark prime.

| The Broken Silence Brian Parnham 2010 Floating Point Records (CD)Ambient-electronic artist Brian Parnham has created a series of highly nuanced, beautifully recorded evocative tribal-ambient releases over the years, including MANTLE on our own steveroach.com label. After 10 years, his first official solo release has been re-released in a new way. Originally composed and recorded between December 1999 and April 2000, the original source and pre-master files were revisited, enhanced and remixed. A few brushstrokes were added and a melted down album mix "Forged From Silence" was created in March 2010. The result is a release that feels like it's from the near future, steeped in a heat-altered landscape that effectively pulls you in deeper with each listen. An auspcious release that stands the test of time, and a vital piece of tribal-ambient magic.

And so it goes on this latest cross-style journey courtesy of Bill Olien and Gary Johnson. FULL CIRCLE moves in and out of quiet ambient places, most tinged with that desert feel, vast and airy and soaring, but also grinds its way through some grittier environments. Resonant Drift have always had an experimental edge that finds its way into the flow, and it's used here to temper the journey.

| Passages Resonant Drift 2011 Flow Space Music / FloBob Music (CD) Produced by Steve RoachResonant Drift is the Southern California-based duo Bill Olien and Gary Johnson. The tools of today's soundscape-based music -- synthesizers, guitars, percussion, ethnic instruments, field recordings, looping and studio processing -- all find an equal place within their work. Having met at one of Steve's Master Classes in 2008, Bill and Gary went on to collaborate on 2009's The Call, which received enthusiastic reviews and airplay in the Ambient community. Their new release Passages makes great strides forward in the duo's sound. This release has the feel of being made from the moment, while at the same time woven with layers of subtle innerplay and amorphous, shifting spaces. The ten pieces and passages find inspiration in part from the challenges faced when traversing a path to enlightenment. Mastering and sonic enhancements by Steve Roach.

| El Costumbre Jorge Reyes (with Steve Roach) 1993 Extreme XCD 021 (CD)We managed to find a very small handful the ultra-rare, out-of-print Extreme label version of this 1993 classic -- still sealed. During this period of the early 90's, a steady stream of influential recordings by Jorge and Steve were created, fusing the ancient and modern spirit of shamanic ceremonial remembering. This release stands together with Suspended Memories, ORIGINS, ARTIFACTS etc. as essential releases which mapped the new landscapes that would soon be called tribal-ambient. Haunting, timeshifting atmospheres, various percussion, clay pots, and pre-Hispaninc flutes abound, along with Jorge's voice and chanting. All of this boils steadily throughout the journey into the "customs" of the new tribes.

| The Disciple's Path Mark Seelig 2020 Projekt PRO369 (CD)After years of collaborations with Steve Roach, Byron Metcalf and Loren Nerell, Seelig returns to his solo work on this unique, engaging medicine music. Potent and seductive, the pieces venture to the frontiers of consciousness, animating the 78 minutes of music with an inviting enticement into dimensions of the beyond.

| The Big Picture Michael Shrieve, David Beal Celestial Harmonies 17060 (CD)For a limited time, we're offering this unique recording which was lost to many. Two of the foremost drummers of rock and new age blended their exceptional talents with the latest technology to create a landmark album. On THE BIG PICTURE, Michael Shrieve and David Beal produce fully orchestrated music using electronic drum pads and digital samplings. Through this system, a drum-pad can sound like a trumpet, violin, voice, or it can create a completely new sound. Though originally composed on computer, all the music on THE BIG PICTURE was played entirely with drumsticks. This album is a refreshing celebration of rhythm and melody. The pieces compose a dazzling menu, ranging from the exotic to the mischievous, all sharing a compelling vibrancy and excitement. THE BIG PICTURE opens a new door for percussionists. It puts the percussionist on a plane with traditional front line soloists and elevates him to orchestral arranger, with infinite combinations of sounds, timbres, rhythms, and instrumentations at his disposal.

| Crescent Moon Omar Faruk Tekbilek (with Steve Roach) 1998 Celestial Harmonies 13176 (CD)Turkish master musician Omar Faruk Tekbilek drawns from Persian mysticism, the sounds of Azerbaijani folksong and classical Arabian belly dancing. He even pays tribute, on the song "Yalel", to the famed Egyptian singer Omm Kulthum. (Tekbilek himself is half Egyptian.) Working with many of the same musicians who have made such distinctive contributions to Tekbilek's earlier albums, he creates a kind of global music, a music that acknowledges Greek, Indian, and of course Turkish music, and attempts to find a common ground between all of these. Perhaps his greatest achievement on CRESCENT MOON is that the album is more than the sum of its parts: it consistently evokes the ecstatic trance of the Sufi dervishes, the biting winds of the desert at night, the rich and exotic scents of an Oriental market, and yet it does so without clearly staying in any one musical tradition.

| Earth Story Temps Perdu? 2000 Amplexus AX01 (CD)This year-2000 release from the Düsseldorf-based husband and wife team known as Temps Perdu? brings the full gamut of ethno-electro tribal ambient obsessions into play. It's like a flowing ride along a snaking river, where ethnic influenced electronic trance grooves come and go, as do a plethora of synth textures, organic sounds and instruments. Evidence of an earlier trip to the Timeroom, along with the influence of Jorge Reyes and Suspended Memories, is undeniable but this not clone zone music, as they feel it in their own way, and bring an evocative voice to the tribal gathering.

| Transmuting Currents John Vorus 2006 (CD) Produced by Steve Roach Reviewed by Electroambient Space, HypnagogueTRANSMUTING CURRENTS is an outstanding debut by ambient-electronic and accomplished didgeridoo artist John Vorus. John has been patiently evolving his sound and ambient sound creation approach since the 90's. Now we get to share in his travels with this debut release. Presented as a continuous blend of electro-acoustic atmospheres, natural sounds, hypnotic beatscapes and didgeridoo rhythms, all boiled down into a delicately simmering aquatic tidepool oozing with audio lifeforms melting from track to track like a balm for mind. The mixing and co-production was performed by Steve Roach in his Arizona based Timeroom studio during an intensive 5-day marathon session in 2005. Framing this sonic statement with a feeling of genuine artistic commitment and vision, the disc is packaged in an elegant custom-made die-cut fiber board CD wallet with slipcase, and printed using a special 6-color process.
