A Desert Dreamtime Journey

Steve Roach, Steve Lazur
2018 Timeroom Visions 1112 (Video) – 2018 Digipak re-release

First released in 2001, we recently found 200 sealed Time of the Earth DVD's hidden away. A new Digipak cover was created for this collectors' edition.

"Time of the Earth offers a unique DVD immersion experience. Either as an engaging audio-visual odyssey or for the environmental enhancement of one's living space, this captivating film experience invites repeat viewings. Steve Roach, the master of mind-altering, atmospheric soundworlds, has long been influenced by the expansive landscapes of the desert southwest. On Time of the Earth, he has found the visual poetry to match his evocative music: a 77-minute photographic feast for the eyes created by Steve Lazur. Gleaned from three years of filming the most remote natural wonders of the American West, turbulent cloud formations hover over sun-scorched canyons. Epic rock sculptures grant reluctant entrance to vistas still echoing from the dawn of creation. Time-lapse and slow motion film techniques merge with real-time movement through landscapes so surreal they draw viewers into an alternate universe that nonetheless exists right here on this planet." -- Linda Kohanov

Running time: 77 minutes. All-region (except Japan) playback. NTSC. Features scene search and two full-length Dolby Digital stereo soundtracks.

Day Out of Time
10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition with 'Time of the Earth'

Steve Roach
2012 Projekt PRO272 (Video)
Reviewed by Richard Gurtler

Elegantly repackaged for its 10th anniversary, DAY OUT OF TIME (Deluxe Edition) includes a special value-added DVD: Steve Lazur's film TIME OF THE EARTH: A Desert Dreamtime Journey. For the first time, the film and its CD soundtrack are presented in one cohesive package. As an added bonus, THE DREAM CIRCLE is included as an alternate audio track on the DVD.

The power of the desert has been a core inspiration of Roach's work, and this release presents a compendium of tracks recorded at the zenith of that period. As a comprehensive overview of Steve's influential tribal-ambient and desert-ambient soundworlds, DAY OUT OF TIME weaves together classic tracks along with out-of-print and hard-to-find pieces.

Sustained and expansive, the atmospheric majesty of this soundtrack represents some of Steve's finest work in the tribal-ambient genre. In the midst of a deeply stratified soundscapes, dynamic earthbound tribal percussion passages rise up from the landscape under the shadows of billowing, glass-bottomed clouds. Part tribal, part haunting drifts, and purely time suspending, the release is essential Steve Roach. Like the stone monuments and forever vistas that inspired the music, this release majestically stands up to the test of time. It sounds as if it emanates from deep desert canyons in a realm from the near future or ancient past.

Never before available in stores, the DAY OUT OF TIME audio CD and its companion DVD paints visceral soundworlds from vast desert vistas, jagged peaks, and iconic stone pinnacles carved by wind, sand, and water into fantastic alien sculptures. The music tells the wordless story of the desert dreamtime.

For electronic music aficionados, established as well as new Steve Roach fans, DAY OUT OF TIME -- with its companion DVD TIME OF THE EARTH -- is a vital and rewarding listening and viewing experience.

This soundtrack contains classic tracks along with out-of-print and hard-to-find pieces woven together to tell the wordless story originally released on the recent desert dreamtime DVD on Projekt, TIME OF THE EARTH. As such, it provides a comprehensive view of Steve's influential tribal-ambient and desert-ambient soundworlds. Like last year's PURE FLOW collection, the sequence of the tracks melding into one continuous flow reflects a new perspective on the different eras of Steve's work.

Supporting the theme is a hauntingly beautiful cover image that Steve has been saving for the right release, ever since 1987. This black & white image is from a remote part of Mono Lake in California, and taken by reknown nature photographer Jim Stimson. The image itself seems to emanate a world of sound that occurs on this day out of time.
