2020 Telephone Explosion (Vinyl)
QUIET MUSIC is a collection of pieces created by Steve Roach between 1983 and 1986 in respect for silence. The gentle electronics of Roach's synthesizers mix with flute, electric piano and nature sounds flow like breath, enveloping the listener in a sustained, delicate and translucent atmosphere. QUIET MUSIC was originally released as a three tape cassette series in 1986 on Fortuna Records and is now being issued as a complete series on vinyl for the first time ever.
After STRUCTURES FROM SILENCE was released, Steve was receiving invitations to create music for the emerging meditation yoga and healing arts community in Los Angeles. QUIET MUSIC 1 was originally commissioned for a meditation video, which featured a collection of video images of lush forested areas, wild flowers and natural serenity. But by the time the piece was completed, the producer passed away and the project was never completed. QUIET MUSIC 1's direct connection to a distinct environment set the tone for the trilogy of albums. QUIET MUSIC 2 was inspired by Steve spending a lot of time in deserts and was created as a natural progression from STRUCTURES FROM SILENCE, and the more nocturnal feeling of QUIET MUSIC 3 were pieces designed for Steve's personal healing practices.
The QUIET MUSIC series was released in a timeline that is often seen as linear but this music was created directly alongside the dynamic fully electronic albums like NOW, TRAVELER, and EMPETUS. In the early 80's Steve would be shifting between the invigorating sequencer-percussive driven music and then move directly into weightless drifts and contemplative spaces. This way of creating grew naturally out of a desire to not settle into one place sonically and to nourish himself with a space that could be creative and fine tuned, creating a calm and renewing zone while living within the hectic pace of urban life in Los Angeles.

For the first time ever, the meditative, ambient minimalism of the QUIET MUSIC series is available in its entirety in a 3-CD digi-pak release. Originally released in the mid-'80s on cassette and later in a truncated 2-CD edition, QUIET MUSIC: THE ORIGINAL 3-HOUR COLLECTION presents this landmark album as Roach envisioned it.
QUIET MUSIC is a collection of pieces created between 1983 and 1986 in respect for silence. The gentle electronics of Roach's synthesizers mix with flute, electric piano and sounds of nature flowing like breath, enveloping the listener in a sustained, delicate, translucent atmosphere.
Jim Brenholts, allmusic.com: "QUIET MUSIC is the essence of pure, meditative ambience. Steve Roach has always been a visionary performer; his work defines 'elegant futurism.' He released these on cassette in 1986, and it remains in the forefront of introspective minimalism. This series set the stage for all minimalists to follow. He was one of the first to demonstrate that ambient minimalism does not have to be dark, that it can be bright and hopeful without becoming maudlin or too new age. This is groundbreaking space music from an epic and legendary performer. He is peerless in his corner of the perpendicular universe."
Much of this music began as a series of early-'80s recordings commissioned by healing-arts programs and later used for everything from personal meditation to birthing music. Today these pieces still stand as a cornerstone in body-work, yoga, and healing therapies.
The enduring nature of this music is even more significent when placed in the context of the '80s climate from which it originated. "In looking at the arc of my music, nearly 30 years after creating QUIET MUSIC," Roach reflects, "I still feel an unbroken connection to this same inner breath and pulse I was discovering within myself and my creative life at that time. Even with everything that was going on in the early '80s -- musically, culturally, politically - this music came to exist in its own dimension, outside of that time, separate from the day-to-day climate in which I was surrounded. I was yearning to express a timeless and universal soul-tone, a safe haven within the music. I had tapped into a reliable way to access this quiet repose at several favorite getaways in nature which was the main influence of this music."
Harold Budd, September 29, 1986: "I think Steve Roach's QUIET MUSIC is his best album. It's not that it's simply pretty (which it is), but there's an odd edge lurking in the background that moves it miles away from 'New Age' torpor. This is a lovely album from a composer working at the top of his skills."
Listening to the release anew, one can sense Roach's emerging vision of expressing a rarified, tranquil inner experience through sound and music: a vision both emotional and vivid. The soothing, introspective nature of QUIET MUSIC flows at a time-suspending pace, gently evolving and using space to expand and explore the essence of silence. The space between the notes and the breathing quality bring the listener to a deeper awareness of the present moment.
Darren Bergstein, One Thousand Pulses: "Finally reissued in its entirety, Roach's classic minimalist paean of austere beauty is both profound and timeless with its delicately folding textures seemingly minted from the very skeins of heaven itself."

SPACE AND TIME offers a unique overview of the nearly 20 years of groundbreaking recordings from noted ambient pioneer Steve Roach. Excerpting tracks from his 13 Projekt CD's, Roach hand-selected and mixed these pieces into a perfect flow which serves as an ideal insight into his vast recorded history. "Space" and "time" are two themes that run constant in all Roach's music. Rich with emotion and nuance, his sound creations evoke a strong sense of space and atmosphere while simultaneously altering the perception of time within that space. From the expansive, time-suspending landscapes reflected in releases such as 1984's STRUCTURES FROM SILENCE and 2003's MYSTIC CHORDS & SACRED SPACES to the fire breathing, rhythmic-shamanic expressions woven from all things electric and organic on 1989's DREAMTIME RETURN and 2000's THE SERPENT'S LAIR, Roach has earned his position in the international pantheon of major ambient-atmospheric-electronic artists. Fueled by his prolific nature and uncompromising approach, SPACE AND TIME invites the listener on a 74-minute journey into the extraordinary soundworlds of Steve Roach.

Now after years of requests, the remaining cassette-only releases of QUIET MUSIC have been collected and remastered on CD to join the original single CD first released in 1988. These recordings from the early 80's were originally commissioned for several healing arts programs. The early strands of Steve's synthesizer paintings are joined with melodic flute and sounds from the high desert blended in an understated serene atmosphere. The pure peaceful, non-threatening nature of this music was soon discovered for use in meditation, birthing and Hospice programs and continues to find its use in this way today. This early chapter in Ambient Music is presented as a double CD on Fortuna Records. Disc One is the original QUIET MUSIC CD with the sand dunes cover. Disc Two is side one of the QUIET MUSIC 1 cassette, side two of the QUIET MUSIC 3 cassette and a shorter piece that ended the original QUIET MUSIC 3.

Disc 2 presents an overview from the vast atmospheric soundworlds that only Steve can brew up. A stirring, spiraling, unreleased archive piece closes the second disk in a subtle yet profound way, illustrating why this influential artist continues to inspire listeners worldwide.
