Introspective passages where the organic texture and emotions of the viola play out over an atmosphere of engulfing mournful beauty. magnify | Different Spaces Erik Wøllo 2017 Projekt PRO338 (CD)Different Spaces presents Erik's first 2-CD studio release, clocking in at 2 hours and 45 minutes. This release marks nine years since Steve introduced Erik's music to the Projekt label with the Stream of Thought collaboration. Projekt has gone on to support a long list of beautiful releases from Wøllo over this time, all consistent in quality, style and artistry. In this set, the Norwegian artist moves away from the stately themes and measured compositions of past releases and into a new place that feels lively and spontaneous. Shorter pieces and passages move through, as the title suggests, different spaces on this sonic travelogue. Marking 35 years as an artist-in-sound, Erik's influences and inspirations appear more on the sleeve in some of these pieces. Be it Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here, Steve Roach's Towards the Dream from DREAMTIME RETURN, and the pulsing sequencer weavings of Tangerine Dream and Euro electronic classics, the echoes of these and more are felt throughout the release. Wøllo's trademark guitar signature sound and graceful melodic touch remain a constant throughout.

The spiral, a visual symbol of eternity, is a reoccurring metaphoric theme in Steve Roach's pioneering electronic work. Interpreted into musical form, these six spiraling sonic experiences offer a living activation that connects with a sense of the infinite. Roach's long history and love of analog sequencer-based styles reveal a continuing, evolving awakening within SPIRAL REVELATION's 63 minutes. Using only analog and hardware instruments to focus the mind's ear upon a filigree of intricate patterns woven with a direct hands-on approach, the artist sculpts and caresses sound into being in real time. An emotional through-line brings life to these pieces as the unfurling of time's windings connects to the vivid present and illuminates with anticipation a life-affirming future. A masterful expression of an artist who has infused his soul into the art form of electronic music.

| The Venerable Dark Cloud 69-minute extended re-release Loren Nerell 2016 Projekt PRO330 (CD) – limited edition of 300An ambient hybrid of traditional Indonesian soundscapes and electronics. Originally released in 2000 on Italy's Amplexus label, Loren Nerell extends THE VENERABLE DARK CLOUD's original 22 minutes to over 69 minutes, culminating in a complete vision capturing a sound that Sequences described as "modern ambient drone music (that) melds with ancient tribal cultures to form something entirely new, sounding ages old".
In 2000, Glen Hammett wrote for The Raging Consciousness Desk, THE VENERABLE DARK CLOUD "is spectacular, creative, and a delight to listen. Enchanting! The sensation the listener comes away with is one of a sacred mysterious quality, and I found myself wanting more when it ended".
Sixteen years later, the wait is over. Capturing an ambient sound informed by Indonesian gamelan music, and the concept of animism, Loren remarks, "What would it be like to be a soul or spirit inside a gong? You would not think in human ways but maybe in gamelan tones. This album is how I imagine it would be to be that gong".
From the liner notes, Loren writes:
This project started back in 1998 when Stefano Gentile asked me to contribute to his Amplexus mini-CD ambient label. The timing was perfect: I had just finished my masters degree in ethnomusicology, it had been a while since I had any time to create music, and I was very eager to get back to creating again.
The first thing that came was the title; well, actually I stole the title. THE VENERABLE DARK CLOUD is the English translation of the name given to the UCLA Javanese gamelan ensemble "Kyai Mendung". I felt this title fit the mood of the music I was writing, plus I also had this concept for what the album was about. Indonesia is predominately Islamic, but underneath there are many layers of other beliefs including Animism, the belief that everything has a soul. This has filtered down into everything including gamelan ensembles; it is thought that the spirit of the ensemble resides in its largest gong. As an outsider, I was fascinated. I wondered, "What would it be like to be a soul or spirit inside a gong?" You would not think in human ways but maybe in gamelan tones. This album is how I imagine it would be to be that gong. "Within The Cloud" is how a gong would think created using only gamelan tones that I processed.
One unique aspect of the Amplexus concept that I found challenging was the short capacity of the little 3-inch CDs they released on; they held about 23 minutes rather than the 74 minutes on a standard CD. It was a challenge, but I found around 22 minutes of music to include. I felt and still feel it is the strongest work I have produced to date.
Fast forward about ten years; the CD is long out of print. Steve Roach suggested that I release the CD again but this time as a full-length version. I went back into my archives and found a couple of tracks that I did not include on the original release due to length. "Liquid Metal Statis" appeared on the Hypnos Compilation CD Weightless, Effortless and has been slightly remixed for this disc. The other was an alternative version of the song "Eclipse," now called "Another Cloud". Completing the vision are tracks "Tenganan Grove" and "Lambat Lane".

Unlike Sam's work in Black Tape For A Blue Girl, Dave Bowman is full-on electronic music: droning space, wordless drift with long suspended passages. Covering Bowman's journey to the Monolith near Jupiter, the album touches the edges of isolation and glacial solitude, with a discernible warm human core. MONOLITH's epic expanses, asteroid flybys, serene ambient moments, vast open textures, and warmer hues of sparse remoteness are barren, yet without leaving the listener abandoned. magnify | The Wolf At The Ruins / Migration Forrest Fang 2013 Projekt PRO290 (CD)Projekt opens the archives to bring back two formative ambient works. Originally released in 1989 and 1986 respectively, THE WOLF AT THE RUINS and MIGRATION have been out of print for over 20 years. They're from the period when he began his own fusion of electronics and traditional non-Western instruments into a modernist blend of electronics, ambient and world music. Re-released with two bonus tracks per album, and remastered by Robert Rich, this limited edition 2-CD reissue of 300 copies is the definitive way to experience Fang's early visionary blend of space music, hypnotic minimalism and earthy polyrhythms with a Far Eastern bent.
Originally released on Fang's cryptically named Ominous Thud label, these releases incorporate tape delay techniques first popularized by ambient pioneers Robert Fripp and Terry Riley, combined with a broadening palette of influences from non-Western folk music to ambient music to progressive rock. THE WOLF AT THE RUINS, released in 1989, was a particularly significant album for Fang that brought him to greater prominence with extensive airplay on nationally syndicated radio show such as Music From the Hearts of Space and Echoes.
"These albums were really a turning point for me, musically," says Fang. "With my exposure to traditional Chinese music and other non-Western forms such as Balinese gamelan, I was seeing and hearing new colors and textures that seem to form their own sound and language, maybe just a bit beyond my grasp but close enough for me to preserve the essence of what I was experiencing."
"Fang's compositional stylings applied to the genre of space music with exceptional results." -- Billboard
What reviewers have said about THE WOLF AT THE RUINS:
"THE WOLF AT THE RUINS is an intriguing album that freely mixes space music with multifaceted ethnic colorings in a way that is sure to appeal to connoisseurs of experimental global music." -- Allmusic.com
"An oriental-occidental fantasy world of music is created; not new age nor background music, but something deeper, evocative and involved." -- Audion
"[Fang's] release ... confirms his stature ... as being among the best American synthesists. However, Fang does not rely solely on electronics. He works with traditional non-Western instruments and musical styles (especially those from his Chinese heritage), and processes them through contemporary technology and a more modernist approach ... Simply put, Fang has produced a gorgeous piece of work." -- Option
What reviewers have said about MIGRATION:
"Dreamlike and meditative soundscapes." -- New Gibraltar Encyclopedia of Progressive Rock
"Layered keyboards are the dominant instrument or repetition-based pieces reminiscent of Terry Riley and Mike Ratledge." -- Sound Choice

| Slow Dream Loren Nerell 2012 Projekt PRO271 (CD) Produced by Steve Roach Reviewed by Relaxed MachineryLoren Nerell creates a masterful release of deep ambient with SLOW DREAM, field recordings from the world of sleep. On his seventh solo release, Nerell's four lengthy tracks are all-encompassing sonic environments forged mainly from extremely processed location recordings made during his trips to Bali. Rich drones and shimmering highlights skirt over the organic textures, processed and layered into subtle, delicate resonant spaces. Glowing, amorphous drifts of sound create the impression of traveling along the supple contours of subterranean passageways. This SLOW DREAM takes ethereal shape as an exotic but compelling atmosphere that hovers between the waking and sleep state. When experienced at a lower volume and left to repeat play over the course of a few hours, the transportive effect of this soundscape is especially powerful and mind-altering.

| Animism Forrest Fang 2012 Projekt PRO274 (CD) – Eco-Wallet Reviewed by Relaxed MachineryMulti-instrumentalist / electronic composer Forrest Fang has been creating his powerful blend of world instrument East-West-influenced sound art for over three decades. The pieces have the elegance and grace of "serious" composed music but the overarching feeling is pure, all-organic, and very human at the core. On his latest, ANIMISM, a long list of acoustic instruments and some synths are brought into play. The thick harmonic stew is created from a deep and heady slow boil of acoustic and electronic sources, treated with extreme audio processing, finding a shared cellular bond after what feels like a long marinade in deep reverberating spaces. Highly recommended!

| Journey of One The Tribal Ambient Era Live 1996 Steve Roach 2011 Projekt PRO266 (CD) Reviewed by Connexion Bizarre, Morpheus Music, Relaxed Machinery, Sonic Curiosity, Synth & SequencesJOURNEY OF ONE is a pinnacle live performance captured during the zenith of Steve Roach's rich tribal-ambient origins of the mid-1990's. The music rises from the darkness, an ancient voice chants in serpentine ecstasy only to subside and hover next to silence, soon broken by raging hybrid trance grooves, didgeridoo and mind-altering soundscapes that mesh to form a soundtrack for a future-primal culture. JOURNEY OF ONE is an ascent into the mystical and primordial places Roach first developed on DREAMTIME RETURN, ARTIFACTS, ORIGINS, WORLD'S EDGE and his Suspended Memories collaborations. This 2-CD set unfolds like the genesis of this influential sound.

| Eztica Soriah 2011 Projekt PRO264 (CD)EZTICA, brethren follow up to 2009's ATLAN, draws a heavy, hungry first breath like that of the first man Quetzalcoatl created from maize. Soriah's virtuoso Tuvan throat-singing, Central Asian stringed instruments and hand percussion is perfectly melded with the neo-ancient airs of Ashkelon Sain's exquisite darkwave guitars, celestial electronics, and hypnotizing poly-rhythms. EZTICA has its roots in the ceremonial: ritualism, shamanism, butoh. It is a deeply organic experience, the voice drawing out the primordial spell, touching the earth, reaching for the sky. Captivating percussive sections with driven vocals glide effortlessly across windswept steppes, while otherworldly overtones hang like clouds in a frosted mountain range, all amid deep expanses of slowly shifting, mesmerizing tones. And when the Quetzalcoatl Kundalini of Soriah's lyrical throat singing fires down the spine, everything goes astral.

| Silent Currents: Live at Star's End Erik Wøllo 2011 Projekt PRO262 (CD)The 2-CD SILENT CURRENTS showcases a different side of Erik Wøllo's sound. Here he explores fascinating electronic / ambient landscapes with slow-motion structures, surreal soundscapes and floating currents. Drawn from two separate live radio broadcasts, 104 minutes of music traverse a more ambient, atmospheric and textural side than experienced on his other albums. Recorded in the studio of the famous Star's End radio show in Philadelphia, these performances from 2002 and 2007 are each a disc-long continuous piece with several chapters. With more focus on the deep drones than on melody and rhythm, zones drift and morph, organically flowing into each other. Layers of electronics and processed sound combine with light touches of electric guitar melody floating on top. Quiet, sparse and gentle electronic music with ambient passages mix with occasions of sequencer pulses.

| Cities in Fog 2 Jeff Greinke 2011 Projekt ARC010b (CD)The seeds for this project were sown in early 1995, when Naut Humon (of Sombient Records) invited me to contribute music to a compilation (the first part of a trilogy) entitled Throne of Drones. After accepting this offer, I found myself thinking of musical terrain I had all but abandoned some years earlier. I subsequently composed music for the compilation, as well as for the second part of the trilogy, that strongly reminded me of my earlier work. Out of this renewed interest in exploring such musical landscapes came the notion of making, 10 years later, a sequel to my first album, Cities in Fog.

| Gateway Erik Wøllo 2010 Projekt PRO244 (CD)Since the mid-80s, Wøllo has released a string of mesmerizingly melodic, textural, original albums culminating in Gateway, his 14th solo release. His recent collaboration with Steve Roach, STREAM OF THOUGHT, helped introduce a new audience to his personal signature of introspective atmospherics. Working over two years creating Gateway, Wøllo presents a fine-tuned collection of carefully crafted compositions; electro-symphonies morph through a wide variety of moods, guitar expositions and crescendos. With a minimalist's restrained elegance, Wøllo creates evocative passage through imaginary landscapes by blending dark and light elements. The resulting music is visual, kindling the feeling of nature inspired by the Nordic landscapes of Wøllo's homeland. | Phantoms Forrest Fang 2009 Projekt PRO230 (CD)PHANTOMS is Forrest Fang's 9th solo album and the follow-up to his Projekt release, GONGLAND. Nearly eight years in the making, PHANTOMS builds on the gamelan-influenced soundscapes of its predecessor by weaving organic sounds of non-Western stringed and percussion instruments and filtering those sounds through a rich melodic tapestry of warm and vaporous atmospheres. Fang's subtly layered and continually evolving textures combine his Asian influences with his love of fractal algorithms that reflect the chaotic beauty of nature. The ambiences of PHANTOMS evoke a state of contemplation within a world in flux. The centerpiece of the album is a 23-minute ambient suite -- "The Hallucinations of Hung Tung" -- inspired by the otherworldly paintings of a Taiwanese fisherman and outsider artist.

| Nada Terma Steve Roach, Byron Metcalf, Mark Seelig 2008 Projekt PRO222 (CD) Reviewed by e/i magazine, Electroambient Space, Guts Of Darkness, Musique Machine, Sonic CuriosityNADA TERMA merges the boundaries of ambient, world music and sacred-meditative styles. On NADA TERMA (translated as "discovering spiritual treasures through the world of sound") East Indian tonalities blend with Sufi-like trance percussion immersed in atmospheres, drifts and drones, arriving at a state of relaxed, focused awareness. The continuously-woven 73-minute piece is sequenced into seven discrete segments, perfect for any listener looking for extended states of awareness, creative enhancement, yoga, bodywork, and deep listening.
Following upon the groundbreaking work of 2006's MANTRAM, NADA TERMA is the second Projekt collaboration between Arizona's Steve Roach and Byron Metcalf with Germany's Mark Seelig. On NADA TERMA they reach deeper into the mystical / spiritual realm, presenting a blend of diverse worlds skillfully combined in an organic fashion. Deep-trance frame drums, clay pots and percussion meet with harmonic overtone vocals (akin to Tuvan throat singers) and the yearning sounds of the stringed Indian Dilruba, and East Indian bansuri flute, bringing a melodic and spiritual-contemplative highlight to the release. All of this exists within an enigmatic world of shadow and shifting light developed by way of artful enhancements and processing of the acoustic instruments. These complements are part of a constant, slowly breathing subtext of drones and atmospheres in which the entire experience lives.

The two-CD Magnum Opus is perhaps the most important, widely known and highly respected release in Steve Roach's vast body of work. it serves as an essential benchmark within the Ambient-Ethno-Atmospheric genre. DREAMTIME RETURN still sounds like a transmission from the near future and the very distant past. Roach's travels in the Australian outback, along with studies of the Aboriginal Dreamtime, and his desert walkabouts in California were the lifeblood for this recording which still defies the boundaries of genre classification 17 years after its release... This 2005 edition has been lovingly remastered using a 24-bit process, and sounds better than ever. It also features never-before seen photos from Steve's Australian adventure during the making of this recording.

| Anthology 1984 - 2004 Vidna Obmana 2004 Projekt PRO157 (CD)2004 celebrates the 20th anniversary of Vidna Obmana. These past 20 years signified Vidna Obmana as one of the most wilful independent exprimental artists around. He recorded more than 35 CD albums, whether solo or in collaboration, of music that explored the abrasive side of electronic composition, the freeform landscapes of the isolationist ambient aesthetic, the structured interactivity of Fourth World soundscapes, international music traditions and post-classical experimentations. Vidna Obmana's ANTHOLOGY 1984 - 2004 release marks this celebration and covers Vidna's oeuvre from 1984 up 'til 2004. For the first ever, this anthology links Vidna Obmana's most succesful ambient period with his most obscure earlier phase. A period in his career that Vidna Obmana refused to recognize until a year ago when he realized that his experimental and noise phase created the foundation for what he has produced so far. Twelve selections which range in style from ambient music in the vein of THE RIVER OF APPEARANCE and his ambient Trilogy to harsh noise electronics from the early 80's. An unique and provocative document confirming Vidna Obmana's essential position in the field of electronic and modern experimental music. This CD, the first in a series of anthologies, also stands for the birth of Vidna Obmana's own label Ikon (this first release is in alliance with Projekt). The circle is complete and a new path lies ahead. Be aware this is challenging, provoking listening, shifting between omninous sound eruptions and the more developed forms of later years.

The music's foundation is built upon long mid-tempo hybrid grooves with strong bass elements created from a combination of acoustic and electronic means. Steve Roach's atmospheric and loop-spun melodic guitar textures rise and fall, intermix with his synth and computer alchemy to create an aura of complex emotional import. Recorded in one continuous 74-minute session, this is a dark sanctuary of pure texture and beautiful, if not at times foreboding, dissonance pulled along with pulsing beats, subtle loops and dense soundworlds. The single piece, "Spirit Dome," captures a chilling gothic ambience that offers the exploration of remote psychological states of awareness. This is achieved by way of extensive live processing of instruments including fujara (overtone flute), guitar, and the seemingly bottomless wellspring of electro-acoustic sounds found only in the duo's soundscapes.

| Space and Time An Introduction to the Soundworlds of Steve Roach Steve Roach 2003 Projekt PRO151 (CD) Reviewed by Bert Strolenberg, John Shanahan, Sonic CuriositySPACE AND TIME offers a unique overview of the nearly 20 years of groundbreaking recordings from noted ambient pioneer Steve Roach. Excerpting tracks from his 13 Projekt CD's, Roach hand-selected and mixed these pieces into a perfect flow which serves as an ideal insight into his vast recorded history. "Space" and "time" are two themes that run constant in all Roach's music. Rich with emotion and nuance, his sound creations evoke a strong sense of space and atmosphere while simultaneously altering the perception of time within that space. From the expansive, time-suspending landscapes reflected in releases such as 1984's STRUCTURES FROM SILENCE and 2003's MYSTIC CHORDS & SACRED SPACES to the fire breathing, rhythmic-shamanic expressions woven from all things electric and organic on 1989's DREAMTIME RETURN and 2000's THE SERPENT'S LAIR, Roach has earned his position in the international pantheon of major ambient-atmospheric-electronic artists. Fueled by his prolific nature and uncompromising approach, SPACE AND TIME invites the listener on a 74-minute journey into the extraordinary soundworlds of Steve Roach.

It is a bold step in a new direction: Where sounds paint pictures with a range of colors drawn from the land, where stories are told with the instruments of old and new pioneers. Guitars, harmonicas and washboard rhythms find their place next to a wagon full of electronics. This is the music, and even more the soundtrack, to the lingering ghosts and the lost and not-so-forgotten dreams of the restless souls driven to "Go West by God!" The story shifts between the present and the recent past when a dust trail was the only road west. The rails were freshly laid, still wet with sweat and blood. For better or worse, hopes and dreams turned real in the vast southwestern deserts, becoming a metaphor for a clean slate and a better life.

A dark and inviting descent through textures that swirl and drift like liquid smoke while ethno-electronic grooves throb with primal urges. This double CD presents a "day" and "night" disc, starting with the rhythmic, then moving to pure atmospheric drifts. "This is an unequalled achievement and nothing in ambient or space-music can be compared... organic, graceful, it approaches the realm of the sacred." -- (Detroit Metro Times)

| The Lost Pieces Steve Roach 1995 Projekt R13 (CD) Reviewed by MuzeA great collection of "lost" pieces that came shortly after the completion of a project, or from multi-artist samplers between 1988 and 1992. Steve's various styles from that time are presented here in a way that flows effortlessly from one space to the next. Another good introduction to Steve's music.

| Memories Compiled 1 Vidna Obmana 1994 Projekt (CD)1998/1999 | A beautiful double-CD bringing together Vidna's first two cassettes, along with unreleased material from the same era. Comprising the majority of this Belgian composers work from his post-industrial period, these two hours focus on a dense dark ambient sound, with an un-nerving sub-texture. The packaging and music on this release amazingly capture Vidna Obmana in his dark prime.
