magnify | Afterlight Steve Roach 2009 Timeroom Editions 21 (CD) Reviewed by Signal to NoiseAfter the stillness comes the AFTERLIGHT. Created in the Spring of 2009, in the afterglow of DYNAMIC STILLNESS, this long-form piece delivers the listener deep inside a multi-dimensional realm of forming clouds, an endless expanse with no boundaries or sense of temporal limits. Amorphous strands of harmonic lumina emerge and recede in a constant unfolding and reconfiguring state for the duration of this pure atmospheric suspension. This piece, along with its two companion releases DESTINATION BEYOND and IMMERSION: FOUR were created over the the same time period, and all share a common sense of breath, interconnection and pursuit of timelessness. Refined over several months, the piece was kept in constant low-volume playback during sleep, rest and times of reflection. The ongoing experience of living with the piece, and shaping it before its release into the world, has become a vital part of Steve's immersion process, going back to 1984's STRUCTURES FROM SILENCE.

This is the next highly-anticipated chapter in the BODY ELECTRIC / LIGHT FANTASTIC story, except this time it's a new book altogether. This project has gone through several phases in its development over the past two years. Numerous pieces were created and set aside as the artists made new discoveries and continued pushed the envelope further than ever before. Roach and Vir Unis pulled out all the stops to create a music experience that flows with the natural precision of the body's life-blood, by way of a constant enfoldment of hyperstate fractal grooves and luminous soundworlds that are unique to their collaborative spirit.

Nine precise pieces that still sound fresh today. A favorite of sequencer music lovers. The second disc, "The Early Years", features two amazing long-form sequencer pieces circa 1982. The first piece, "Harmonia Mundi" was recorded live in the L.A.-based Timeroom with Swiss-born electronic musician Thomas Ronkin. At 45 minutes, this is one of the more possessed and intense analog sequencer trance pieces you're likely to hear. "Release" is a 24-minute solo statement of emotion and energy connected to the early years of Steve's evolution in sound, harkening to NOW and TRAVELER. By the time Empetus was released, the approach of these longer German School styles were morphing into a new sound heard on Empetus and beyond.

| Groove Immersion Steve Roach 2012 Timeroom Editions 26 (CD)This release reveals an entrancing facet within Steve's evolving Immersion series. With the first four Immersion releases focusing on harmonic meditations and glacial forms, IMMERSION FIVE - CIRCADIAN RHYTHMS began the introduction of movement into the series. GROOVE IMMERSION massages the senses by finding the ultra sweet-spot blending of "infinite" grooves and mercurial soundworlds, holding this space for the course of 70 minutes. A fasinating sense of the present moment constantly updates itself with micro shifts inside mandala-like rhythms. At times, an almost weightless sense of being becomes another part of this of mind-altering GROOVE IMMERSION experience.

IMMERSION: FOUR embraces the senses with the warmth and micro subtle perceptual shifts that has defined the Immersion series. No beginning, no end, designed for infinite playback mode, IMMERSION: FOUR is a steady state zone created specifically as a tone meditation, enhancing the living space as sonic incense. Gently immersive and especially effective at low volume, the non-dynamic nature of this space supports focused day and night activities. The Immersion series is perfect for creative states, sleeping, reading, long hours at the computer and other functions where traditional music could be considered invasive.

| Light Fantastic Steve Roach 1999 Hearts of Space 11094 (CD) Reviewed by Gary Andrews, Brian Parnham, various listener comments, Billboard, L.A. Weekly, Muze, Progressive World, RhythmUS, SCI FI Magazine, Wind and WireLIGHT FANTASTIC does much to subvert one's expectations of musical structure, while remaining unabashedly beautiful throughout. Roach's soundworlds have never sounded more rich and full of light. On the other hand, the complexity of the 'fractal grooves' allows the hybrid percussion to assume what would be the melodic content of a given piece. The rhythms are as willful and intricate as an African drumming group or drum 'n' bass track, continually morphing from one pattern into another, describing animated moiré patterns in sound.
