The Immersion series is the very definition of ambient music, creating something out of nothing, something that can be appreciated equally whether listening actively or letting it passively imbue your surroundings. IMMERSION: THREE is three times the fun, the first 1000 copies presented in a gorgeously packaged DVD-style Digipak with beautiful graphic art. Although all three discs are very good, my favorite is easily disc one, "First Light." As the name suggests, it is the lightest of the three, gossamer strands of warm echoes on the wind. Delicate sonic layers are seamlessly blended into a cohesive ambient melange. Disc two is "Sleep Chamber," with the music going deeper and darker, similar in character to DARKEST BEFORE DAWN. The drones seem to resonate into infinity, with soft rounded edges and yet with crystal clarity. "Still" is the last disc, and the darkest, plunging headlong into deep underground caverns of sound. It rumbles with an ominous sense of restlessness in an ultra cool way. Bright shimmers are layered over the top, which add to the sense of foreboding. Three discs, three moods, all classic Steve Roach.
