Circles & Artifacts at Bandcamp!

After the release of their monumental Ascension of Shadows 3-CD set, in 1999/2000 Steve Roach & Vidna Obmana collaborated by mail on the soundtrack for a limited-edition interactive CD-ROM of photography by Martina Verhoeven. The hour of all-new material never appeared on a standalone CD, but here it is, for the first time, as a digital release. A floating long-from meditative piece, it's a unique ambient environment, immersing the listener in a carefully designed soundworld; rewarding whether just below the threshold of perception, or through active listening. The gradual shifting and drifting is music to get lost in. Though the changes over time are subtle — almost imperceptible — there is growth and change.

Featured new limited-edition releases on Periphery, a new boutique label, while supplies last...

Launched in 2011 by i.e.. and e.i. magazine founder music historian, writer, and sound artist Darren Bergstein, the mandate informing the electronic music label Periphery is that it has no definitive mandate. Housed in burnished silver circular tins, all Periphery issues are limited art editions marrying the ephemeral with the tactile in equal measure, featuring artists who mine the deep seams nestled between electronic music's eclectic styles.

Periphery features the kind of surprise releases you might discover at your local independent record store, back in the day, and leave with them in your bag. Hand-made eclectic electronic music in a cool package, with true limited-edition collector runs. All Periphery releases are featured while the limited supply lasts. Coming soon, rare unreleased tracks from Thomas Ronkin, pure German-style sequencer action, and a great release from Radiant Mind, produced by Steve.

First up is Subtle Shift by Within Reason, a.k.a. Gregory Kyryluk (usually trading under his regular moniker Alpha Wave Movement). Within Reason's gorgeous ambient/dub/techno works a nether-region where post-Basic Channel defectors co-habitate with the ghosts of Tangerine Dream's past, late Mille Plateaux-era minimalisms, and the Echocord crew, but rearranges existing aural vocabularies into vivid and refreshing new shapes.

Then there's Of Microcosmic Origins, the debut by Groupthink. A duo comprised of Darren Bergstein (iPhemera, found objects, percussives, voice) and Edward Yuhas (guitar, electronics, loops, iPhemera), Groupthink erect vast drones of machinic elegance buttressed by windswept atmospheres, sentient noises, and the odd rhythmic pulse. Utilizing all manners of instruments analog and digital, archaic and contemporary, the duo improvise with wild abandon, yielding, thanks to their various iPhemera, ambience with teeth.

Greetings Soundcurrent friends,

Today's 11-11-11 date might hold something for some of you. For years I have constantly found myself suddenly looking at a digital clock precisely at 11:11, sometimes twice a day. Along the way, I have met a lot of people who share this same experience. There is lots written about this occurrence; do a Google search to get a taste. For me it has always represented a wakeup call to the present moment, a kind of snapping into an expanded awareness and a great reminder of that kairos moment I want to stay connected to, the meeting of time and destiny. With that said, Kairos will be on sale this weekend only at a price that matches the date. And yes, a few listeners have picked up on the fact that the catalog number for Kairos is 11 11 as well.

Quiet Music Original Three-Hour Edition coming soon! Along with the creation of two all-new releases for this Fall, Steve and Projekt are completing the re-release of the original three-hour edition of Quiet Music. First released as three one-hour cassettes in the mid-80's, Celestial Harmonies wanted to squeeze the 1999 re-release onto a double-CD, cutting nearly 45 minutes of music. Missing were side one of Quiet Music 1 and about 20 minutes from Quiet Music 3. Now that the publishing rights have reverted back to Steve, Projekt will re-release Quiet Music as a 3-CD Digipak with all the music in its original sequence. Look for it at iTunes soon, and a CD release later this Summer.

Steve Roach -- Live At SoundQuest -- Coming May 2011 from Timeroom Editions

Steve's pinnacle performance from 2010's SoundQuest Fest proved to be a real moment in time, and fortunately it was documented with a prestine recording that places the listener front and center. It will be released as a single CD presenting the first 74 minutes of the concert as it unfolded. Three distinct realms are seamlessly mapped out in this inspired set. The opening starts with a 25-minute piece of perpetual forward motion in the mode of Destination Beyond, created specially for the concert, carved from pure analog synths and sequencers. From here we experience an amazing interplay between didgeridoo players Dashmesh Khalsa, Brian Parnharn, percussionist Byron Metcalf and Steve performing real-time looping, processing and mixing along with soundworlds, ocarina and voice. This passage is an all-out expression of shamanic ecstasy that boils over into the engulfing tribal trance state of "Thunder Walk" from the recent release Dream Tracker. The last portion of the set settles into an ultra drifting electro-organic zone. This evocative space, which premiered at the Fest, would soon evolve into the opening of Circadian Rhythms.

Nightbloom Packaging Response and Clarification

After the recent newsletter announcing Nightbloom, some listeners and collectors have emailed expressing concern over the eco-wallet format. I want to make it clear that this packaging is for Nightbloom only. My future releases will remain in Digipaks, as Sigh of Ages and Dynamic Stillness were. These still use a minimal amount of plastic, but fit my criteria as the current favorite for the most elegant collectable package for either the bookshelf or for the collection. Projekt and I are always looking for unique ways to present our music, and this mini LP-like package is part of that pursuit.

The comments from Projekt's Sam Rosenthal were included in my newsletter as perspective on the Nightbloom release, and to show his direction for other Projekt artists. My future releases on both Timeroom Editions and Projekt will remain in normal Digipaks or jewel cases.

The Nightbloom release has a smooth surface inside, and is exactly the same size as a Digipak. It's well-made and designed, with a thicker six-panel version that I requested. It has a spine where the title is readable from a bookshelf, and along with the eco no-plastic aspect, it reminds one of a classic vinyl double-LP jacket of days gone by, which was one of the reasons I chose this packaging for Nightbloom. I know many of you are collectors, and as I do, you regard the cover, package, texture and feel to be part of the overall release experience.

This new release will come as a surprise, as we've kept the lid on it until now. It's currently at the plant, and will be shipping around mid-April. It sounds AMAZING!

The essential ingredients of ancient and contemporary shamanic trance states are fully activated in this highly potent new release. Byron carved out a collection of incredible trance grooves for nearly a year, eventually bringing in the prana-infused didgeridoo of Dashmesh Khalsa on every track. Steve joined on in early January 2010 and poured his heart and soul-drenched soundworlds into the six pieces, covering a full range of ecstatic dreamtime flow: rhythm, breath and expansion. The end result is a full-blown dreamtime alchemy of all the elements. The living, breathing percussion, didgeridoo and soundworlds are unified in a single purpose: to open to the door out of the ordinary world, initiating the listener into an empowered journey of infinite possibilities for spiritual rebirth, illumination, and transcendence.

Soundquest Fest 2010 is set for October 23rd in Tucson. The lineup at this point is Steve Roach, Erik Wøllo, Byron Metcalf, Mark Seelig and Loren Nerell. All artists will play both solo and in different collaborative configurations. The event will be at the Berger Center, a great performance theater in central Tucson where Steve last played in 2006. It will be a one-day event starting in the afternoon and progressing into the evening. In the coming weeks we will have details posted online, and tickets available for sale. A nearby hotel will offer a discounted rate for attendees. October is the perfect month for a Tucson visit, to embrace the music and desert atmosphere. With an intimate theater setting of around 500 seats, you won't want to miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime gathering. More soon!

Many thanks to those who came out for the successful eight-hour immersion event in Pomona on October 17th. The unique blend of Steve's music, Indonesian-flavored ambient artist Loren Nerell and prog rockers Djam Karet brought out a great group of diverse deep listeners who were treated to a large dose of this eclectic blend.

While this was Steve's only 2009 performance, plans are in motion for several concerts throughout 2010. Look for dates in Santa Fe, San Francisco, Los Angeles and more. A larger event in Tucson, Arizona is also in the works for October 2010.

We have just listed a new Jeffery Koepper release Quadranteon; further adventures into the realms of vintage-era analog synth music.

On the Passing of Jorge Reyes:

The essence of Jorge's visionary courage to reach far and deep into the realm of ancestral memories will live on through his amazing work. We met within a landscape of beautiful and extreme conditions during a new music festival on the Spanish island of Lanzarote in the early 90s', occurring the same week the Gulf War started. Along with Suso Saiz we became fast friends with simpatico spirits. This set the tone for a real adventure that continued across three continents and a series of releases and concerts that are high points in in my life.

The friendship, the music and creative conditions were always filled with passion, laughter and a fire that burned from a place we had no choice but to answer to. In working and hanging with Jorge, there was always a sense of stepping off the edge into a kind alluring and dangerous zone that always was supported by an unspoken trust of some primal state he had direct access to. I learned a great deal from Jorge; it was truly an honor to share the peaks and the relaxed moments. I have many great memories where we would find our way back from the edge after these long recordings or live sessions, hearing the results while sipping a fine Tequila with the sounds of our recent journey playing, then calling us back out once more. "Gone From Here", the closing track on Vine ~ Bark & Spore was the last track we created together. I need to hear that now.

Self-confessed nocturnal hermit Brian Skiff, discoverer of countless asteroids and a dozen comets, reflects upon the night sky and his isolated working conditions in this impressionistic sound portrait, set against the eerie backdrop of the Arizona mountains. The sounds of the night -- howling coyotes, bugling elks and chorusing frogs -- are interwoven with the heavy machinery of the telescope motors and domes in a richly layered musical mosaic.

THE MEMORY POOL / REVEALING THE SECRET � First released as a limited edition of 2000 in 1998, the 3-CD box set ASCENSION OF SHADOWS: MEDITATIONS FOR THE MILLENNIUM quickly sold out, and has remained a highly-desired prize for Roach and Obmana fans. The intentions for creating a place of solace for what the artists were sensing, with the approaching anticipation of the year 2000 and beyond, feels especially potent and nourishing when heard now. SOMEWHERE ELSE, the first disc in the box set was re-released in 2005. The original plan was to release the second and third discs over time, but this plan was altered because of a steady flow of new music that Steve and Projekt wanted to focus upon. Recently, Projekt discovered 80 sets of the original pressing of the second and third discs, "The Memory Pool" and "Revealing the Secret". These are now being presented in a DVD-sized case. There are no plans to bring these back into print after these are gone; this is the final stash!

We are excited to announce the launch of two new releases thru steveroach.com. By early October, two new deep ambient recordings that dwell in the hypnagogic realms will be available from our new steveroach.com label. These two releases were produced and mastered by Steve.

Asunder is the debut release by Nathan Youngblood. Carved from dense harmonically rich acoustic and electronic material, this set of tone zones move at glacial speed, hovering very close to the Earth's surface for the duration. Emotionally contained in a sphere of isolation, the gentle tension effectively holds your interest subliminally, and continues to permeate into your physical and mental environment.

Mantle by Brian Parnham plays like a surreal subterranean walkabout within the folds of Utah's alluring slot canyons. Steve Roach commissioned long-time friend and electronic artist Brian Parnham to drop into the deep end of his sound carving skills. The result presents an adroit sound artist coming into full form within this shadowed sonic wonderland of the Earth's inner realms.

Both of these releases are in the final stages of production. Look for an announcement here as soon as they arrive.
